In the Netherlands around 60 billion euros were spent last year in our country on food and drinks. That is 3.8 percent more than in 2017. And what is noticeable: we eat more and more outside the door. The revenue grew by 5.8 percent, almost twice as fast as the total growth in consumption.
This is shown by a research from the FoodService Institute Nederland (FSIN), which conducts annual research into where consumers buy their food and drinks. "Food is one of the newer ways in which large groups of consumers want to show how they live," says FSIN director Jan-Willem Grievink. "Hip food and catering concepts are therefore popping up everywhere"
Especially young people aged between 18 and 36 regularly eat their meals outside the door: 29 percent of them do so at least once a week. While only 10 percent of people between the age of 60 and 70 years do so. Grievink: "But those young people are looking for cheaper food, spending 19.42 euros each time, while the baby boomers spend 30.66 euros at a time."
Other notable conclusions from the study: breakfast outside the door is becoming more popular. Around 14 percent of men do this at least once a week. 20 percent of young people. Dinner outside the door is 18 percent, the same level as of 2006. In 2009, 13 percent of consumers did not eat at home in the evening.
